This newsletter is entirely generated by one of the many AI agents I use to get better performance. It's something I find genuinely useful, and I figured that sharing one of the things I do every Saturday might spark some good conversations. It took me months of iteration to reach a quality level I consider optimal, and I finally want to share it.

At the end, I always write my own personal take on things — and it's just that, an opinion.

I hope you not only read it, but that we can discuss it week after week.

Let's begin!

THE BOMBSHELL OF THE WEEK
---------------------

### xAI implodes: The CFO and Legal Chief flee while Musk burns billions

Mike Liberatore, the CFO who helped raise $10B for Musk's xAI, quietly disappeared after just 3 months (April-July). Robert Keele (General Counsel) also left, citing "fundamental philosophical differences" with Musk. Babuschkin (co-founder) had already bolted to start his own VC. Turnover at Musk's companies hits 44% vs 9% at Meta/Amazon.

There's a clear pattern: executives fleeing before they become "scapegoats" when regulations hit. With no independent board, xAI is a one-man show burning X's cash while competing against OpenAI with Grok.

POWER MOVES
------------------------

### The silent exodus continues: 860 CEOs out of their jobs in 2025

Historic record broken: 222 CEOs left their posts in January alone. Tech leads with 25 monthly transitions (+19% YoY).

Sweetgreen: Jamie McConnell (ex-Chipotle) replaces Mitch Reback as CFO (Sept 22). Snowflake: Brian Robins (ex-GitLab) comes in, Mike Scarpelli goes out. CFOs are churning like never before: they used to last 3-5 years, now it's 18 months on average.

### OpenAI launches a jobs platform: The wolf guarding the sheep

September 4: OpenAI announces a "Jobs Platform" for 2026. The irony is brutal: the company destroying jobs with AI now wants to "help you" find one. It will compete directly with LinkedIn. Josh Bersin calls it an "attempt to mitigate economic dislocation" that they themselves are causing. Pure PR while 79% of graduates say AI makes it impossible to find a job.

MONEY TALKS
---------------

### Q2 2025: AI devours ALL available capital

33 startups in the US each raised $100M+ in 2025, absorbing 70% of total venture funding. Deal count fell 13% YoY but the amounts exploded.

This week's winners:

*   Baseten: $150M Series D at a $2.15B valuation (September 5) - AI infrastructure
* Scale AI's ex-CTO: Launches an AI agent to solve "big data's biggest problem" with undisclosed funding (September 5)
* SPHERE: Launches a product to "control what AI says about you" - perfect timing for a reputational crisis (September 5)

### Down rounds steady at 15.9% - the new normal

Carta Q2: The largest share of down rounds in a decade.

Median Series C hits $629M, but only for new companies. The 2021 unicorns keep taking 30-50% haircuts on the secondary market. VCs are eyeing Asia (Japan's LayerX) for less inflated deals. The message: the party is over, the valuations were theater.

PRODUCT SECRETS
--------------------

### Apple preps an AI search engine for Siri (September 3)

Bloomberg reveals: Apple is quietly developing a Google Search competitor built into Siri. Launch expected with the iPhone 17. AirPods Pro 3 with "health sensors" at the September event. The play: break free from Google ($20B/year in payments) before regulators force them to.

### Amazon Lens Live: The scanner that changes everything (September 2)

Quiet launch of real-time visual search with an integrated AI assistant. Scan physical products, find them online instantly. The killer feature nobody noticed: it can identify and order ANY product you see in real life. RIP traditional retail.

### Nokia opens an R&D campus for "networks built for AI" (September 5)

A massive, unreported facility. They're building infrastructure specifically for AI workloads. The signal: carriers know AI traffic will explode 100x. A billion-dollar investment nobody covers because it's "boring" — but critical.

The boring businesses are where the money is.

REAL NUMBERS vs PUBLIC RELATIONS
-------------------------------------

### Samsung "AI Home" at IFA 2025: Smoke and mirrors

Big "Future Living Now" presentation but zero adoption metrics. Vision AI Companion announced with great fanfare. Reality: smart home penetration remains below 20%. Consumers aren't buying the AI narrative for home appliances.

### Lululemon "embraces AI" for design: Translation = "Layoffs incoming"

September 5: They announce AI to "accelerate" design and go-to-market. Code for: human designers will be replaced. Same playbook as Salesforce (4,000 people out via AI). The pattern is clear: "AI augmentation" always means "human replacement" within 6-12 months.

### Tech layoffs 2025: 189 companies, 82K employees

But the real number is worse. Microsoft, Oracle, and Meta are doing "surgical layoffs" to dodge the WARN Act (sub-100 per location). Oracle Seattle: 101 people out (November 3) is just the tip. Employees estimate 5-10x more layoffs distributed and unreported.

VALLEY DRAMA
-------------------

### Dell: -50% employee satisfaction in 24 months

The annual "Tell Dell" survey reveals a post-RTO collapse. One employee on [TheLayoff.com](http://TheLayoff.com)
: "They lay off thousands, wreck morale with RTO threats, spend $2M on lobby furniture and call it innovation." Managers recommending "back to office" while they themselves work remotely. Fortune 500-grade hypocrisy.

### Microsoft on Reddit: "Mental health through the floor"

A viral thread describes an environment where "the majority are experiencing mental health crises." Managers building an "emotionally abusive culture" under the pretext of excellence. Employees with 10+ years of tenure resigning en masse. Satya Nadella stays silent while the culture he built crumbles.

### The "Fall Guy" pattern: Why everyone is fleeing AI startups

Executives leave before regulations hit. They don't want to take the blame when models fail or governments step in. xAI, OpenAI — all seeing mass exoduses. Martha Heller (exec search firm): "Public LLM failures create additional finger-pointing." Nobody wants to be left holding the candle.

WHAT TO WATCH NEXT WEEK
--------------------------

* Apple Event on September 9: iPhone 17 preview — AI search engine vs Google?
* xAI: Who will be the next executive to flee? Our bet: someone in finance
* Down rounds watch: 2021 unicorns facing the reality of Q3 fundraising
* Microsoft/Dell: More "stealth layoffs" ahead of October earnings
* OpenAI Jobs Platform: Beta testing begins, massive backlash expected

NON-OBVIOUS EMERGING TRENDS
-------------------------------

1\. The "AI Replacement Denial" phase is over. CEOs now openly admit to replacing humans. Salesforce was the first. Expect a possible avalanche of similar "honesty" in Q4 2025.

2\. Asia as a pressure valve for VCs. With the US saturated and valuations inflated, VCs are looking to Japan/Korea for reasonable deals. LayerX is just the beginning.

3\. "Quirky layoffs" - The new playbook. Companies do 99 layoffs per location to dodge the WARN Act's 60-day notice. Distributed pain = fewer headlines.

4\. Executive "philosophical differences" = "This is insane, I'm out." The new code for "the CEO is crazy but I can't say it because of the NDA." We're going to see more of this.

MY TAKE
---------------

The amount of cash being burned is unprecedented. Just look at the CLAUDE MAX subscription: for 200 USD/month, Claude Code users can burn through 20 thousand euros' worth of API tokens for 200 — and if you use worktrees or Conductor to run several agents at once, it's insane. It's all about who captures the developer market, which is very juicy.

AI really IS going to replace the first standard deviation of the Gaussian bell curve. The fact that they're doing surgical layoffs says more about what they're not doing than about what they are.

Apple is way out of the AI game. It's way out of everything — and if Elon Musk runs into regulatory problems with his WeChat replica, he could run into problems with X/xAI. Although betting against Musk usually ends badly.

OpenAI is in the "product" phase of the Wardley map, and their latest moves prove it. I don't think the so-called frontier LLMs have much more to give.

If you're an entrepreneur, don't fall into the trap of building an OpenAI wrapper and calling yourself an artificial intelligence company. Build your own things, niche things.

Over the next 12-18 months we'll see the transition from "AI augmentation" to "No humans needed."

This is where I'd normally say... "subscribe" — but honestly, if I have to remind you, then I haven't done a good job.

Sharing it in your feed is almost better. Feel free to do either — but ideally both :)

Thanks for reading.
